Our New England RV Adventure
The Year of New England
Last year, we went out west and coined our travels as “The Year Of Us,” covering 16 states in 6 months. This year, we decided to travel in the Northeast and focused on the 6 New England states.
We chose to check out Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire & Vermont. Wow, what a ride!!
Timing Is Everything
Even though our focus was the New England states, we started this trek at the end of May from Virginia and then went to Pennsylvania, two states that we have been to many times before. We realized that timing was everything when planning to travel to the New England states.
The weather is very important, and in every state we visited, it was amazing...nice and cool.
We were able to enjoy the outdoors without excessive heat. Traveling before school is out for retired people is key to fewer crowds.
Establishing our own travel comfort level was important.
Connecticut, Rhode Island & Massachusetts
We made our way to Mystic, Connecticut, where we had a small tire issue, but nothing that handyman Duane couldn’t handle. There we went to the best bakery ever...Sift Bake Shop and walked the streets of the historic seaport town of Mystic, CT. We knew we wanted to be in Rhode Island and Massachusetts at a particular time, so we moved at a pace that best fit our pre-arranged plans.
Along this journey, we met up with friends, Ed & Carol, who graciously chauffeured us to Newport, RI, where Duane got to experience his first whole steamed lobster. We began our stay in Massachusetts in Sturbridge, MA.
From there, we rode to Boston with other friends, Mike & Laura, and took an amazing Duck Boat tour and experienced the sights and sounds of Boston.
Our main focus in Massachusetts was the Grand Design NE Owners Rally in Foxborough. If you have never attended an RV-specific rally, you really need to do so. It was a jam-packed week of seminars, fun activities, good food, and great folks.
Maine Adventures
Then our trek led us to Wells, Maine. We explored the beaches of Maine, ate some more lobster, took a day trip to the coastal town of Kennebunkport, where, of course, more lobster was consumed, and lastly walked along the iconic Marginal Way at Perkins Cove.
Needless to say, Duane ate his way through Rhode Island and Maine with the lobster and lobster rolls.
Mountains, Harvest Hosts & Amazing Views
We continued on to New Hampshire and Vermont, where we stayed at 2 amazing Harvest Hosts. Harvest Hosts offers a great place to spend a restful night while traveling to your next destination. We didn’t realize how mountainous southern Vermont was.
We left Maine at 360 feet above sea level and went up to 2,400 feet to Hogback Mountain in Marlboro, VT...
OMG, the views were stunning!!!!
A Surprise Love for New York
These 6 New England states were an experience of a lifetime. We ended our journey visiting New York State. New York is not considered a New England state, but we added it into the mix and were so glad we did. We spent time in Lake George, Glenville, the Finger Lakes area, and finally Niagara Falls!
Each of these towns offered us a greater appreciation of New York... It’s not just the city that everyone marvels about, but the beauty that’s found in small towns and hamlets that make up this great state.
From Daydream to Reality
We used to sit back watching videos and TV shows of other people going places, and wish that we could do that. Now, we have wished our way right into a lifestyle that used to be just a daydream. Traveling the way we do may not appeal to everyone. Some say we move around too much, move too fast, or don’t go to the BIG attractions.
That may be true, but wherever and whenever we “Bankin” is the right time for us!!
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. (Psalm 91:11)
